In the year 3127, humans discovered time travel. The machines were greatly desired by the public, but at first they were kept as a government tool. But eventually, the machines were distributed to people who had excess amounts of money, but there was one that was left in a dumpster, just about the time when an anti-oil drilling group was forming. They found and took the machine, and traveled to the 1500's.
But, a piece of information that they missed was that this particular machine was an old model, and it was one of the only machines that had a 100 year limit on its travel.
They had agreed among themselves to set a stone tablet somewhere in a place that would be very populated in the future: they chose New York.
Before they finished their mission, a gas was emitted from the old machine. It was caused by the travelers exceeding the limit. The gas was fatal to humans. It attached to oxygen molecules, and circulated the earth, eventually killing every human on the planet.
Though the humans died, the gas effected the worlds horses in a different way. They gained the ability to talk. And above that, one horse in particular, named Saav, could control fire, bend and break water, create rain, break the earth, grow trees, control objects, and create strong winds and tornadoes. Using these powers, he merged the continents together. He then gave a small part of his great power to each existing horse, then faded into a silent god of sorts, watching and waiting in the wings for something to happen that he would need to fix. In some way that no one else could figure, he gained immortality.
Well, the horses did not need him for years, but soon, the separation of the elements spirit, fire, air, water and earth was not enough to keep the peace. They created alliances; the Lights believed in the purpose of the time travelers, although they didn't know exactly why from the stories passed onto them. The Shades didn't really care or didn't know, and the Destroyers wanted power and land, no matter what the cost. This is when Saav stepped in again. He gave each alliance a large portion of the land to prevent fighting.
But this didn't work for long. The horses soon realized that there was land outside their territory that was unassigned. This is where the leaders of the lands met to fight. Saav did not step in again, he left this to the leaders.
But in the area that New York was destined to be, a stone tablet still remains. Now the horses may be able to prevent this from re-occurring- that is, if they can find the tablet.
